Blackburn home

More from the postcard/picture book of Claude Barlow

This week I have pictures that are printed on postcard stock but were never mailed. These were probably brought to Connecticut with Claude or mailed to him with other things. He immigrated in 1910, so most of this book is from 1910-1920.

The first picture is of the house his sister Daisie lived in. These are called terraced houses.

In the 1911 UK census Daisie (Agnes Marguerite Blackburn) 35 yrs. lived at 33 Bowker St Broughton, Salford, Lancashire.

Also living there was her husband John Blackburn 37 yrs., son Laurence Blackburn 8 yrs.,

daughter Marjorie Blackburn 4 yrs., father Charles Barlow 64 yrs. and sister May Barlow 20 yrs.

In the 1921 Census they had moved to 27 Bowker St and her father no longer is listed.

John is still employed as a Commercial Traveller (traveling sales representative) for Pikingtons Tile & Pottery Co Ltd.

May 31 yrs. is a Mantle Finisher (A highly skilled dressmaker)

 for Cooperative Wholesale Society Ltd.

Laurence 18 yrs. is a Clerk for Armstrong Sagar & Co Cotton Merchants.

Postcard 1912

 Barlow, Will Postcard

Picture on the front of postcard is P.C. 44872 Llandudno, Happy Valley

Addressed to Mr. C.C. Barlow

                      Groton Connecticut USA

Post marked Llandudno Ju 17 12

Dear Claude,

We came here today for our annual holiday & hope to stay nearly a fortnight.

We trust that you & Gladys (is it?) are well. If you happen to have lost my address let May know & she will supply it to you. Perhaps I owe you a letter. But I have been so busy at the office. Today is Herbert’s wedding.

Love

Will

Dated 17/6/12

Notes:

Llandudno is a seaside resort in Northern Wales.

A fortnight is fourteen nights, or two weeks. ... It comes from the Old English and is literally a shortened form of fourteen nights.

This postcard was sent by Claude’s oldest brother Will. He mentions ‘we went’ but I am not sure of who went on this trip. I have several wedding pictures in this album but none are labeled. Herbert is his brother and May is his sister. I am not sure if the date for Herbert and Maude Turner Barlow’s wedding is the 16th or 17th of June 1912.

Postcard from 1915

Postcard from Charles

I have my grandfather Claude Barlow's scrapbook of postcards and pictures. I hope to document the contents of this book. This is the first of many to come I hope.

Charles Clayton Barlow is one of his older brothers. As a child he never mentioned this brother. I used to sit outside with him during the one week each summer that my parents would visit my grandparents in Devon Connecticut. He would talk of sisters Vergie and Daisey and brother Will but no mention of the other siblings (Herbert, Harry, Charles and May).

 Barlow, Charles Clayton postcard:

Picture on front of postcard is Field Marshal Sir John French Inspector General of the Forces.
